NOIR House Thirteen rooms on a Bruges quay
A quiet boutique stay shaped around design, food and the city outside.
The house

Thirteen rooms means your coffee order survives until tomorrow.
Eleven coats of brown. Linen curtains, lined twice. No art bought by the metre.
The soap is from Ghent, the cups from the next street, the bread from two bridges away.
No lobby music, no conference suite and nothing that pings.

There is one of these. Tall windows on two sides, a deep armchair in the turn of the wall, a turntable and thirty records.

The panelling is original and slightly out of true. A soft headboard, heavy curtains and a lamp that flatters everybody.

Woven headboard, a black freestanding bath and a door straight onto the old cobbled court. Entirely step-free.

Walnut behind the bed, tall glazed doors in front of it, and a small tiled terrace above the stepped gables.
A day in the house

One long table, a loaf from two bridges away, and an egg if you would like one. We stop at eleven. Nobody has ever been asked to leave.
Breakfast at the house

A map marked up in pencil at the front desk, with the good bakery, the bad bridge, and the walk that the tour groups have not worked out yet.
Read the guide

A sauna, a steam room and a very cold shower in the old cloth cellar. One party at a time, so the door locks from the inside.
Wellness

Small plates, natural wines and short brown drinks on the ground floor. Twenty-six seats and it closes when it empties.
Bar Noir

The signature stay
For long mornings and late evenings.
We painted this room in eleven coats of a brown so deep it reads as black until the lamps come on. Then the leather headboard goes amber, the walls go soft, and the room gets about half its actual size in the best possible way. It is the only room in the house we designed entirely for the hours after dark.

The neighbourhood
The Houtkaai quarter, as we have imagined it, is the part of Bruges where the shops sell things people need. There is a boatyard, a brown café, a potter and a bakery that smells of butter from six. The market square is eleven minutes’ walk, which turns out to be exactly far enough.
A sketch of an imagined quarter, not a real street plan.
