We painted this room in eleven coats of a brown so deep it reads as black until the lamps come on. Then the leather headboard goes amber, the walls go soft, and the room gets about half its actual size in the best possible way. It is the only room in the house we designed entirely for the hours after dark.
The bathroom is lined floor to ceiling in bronzed stone from a quarry near Namur, with a freestanding tub in the middle of it and nothing else competing. Beyond the bedroom, a small sitting room has a gas fire, a record player and an armchair that has ended more than one evening early.
In the morning the shutters open on the water and the room turns out to have a completely different personality. Breakfast comes up whenever you ring for it, which in this suite is usually eleven.
